  1. Ancient province of central France now 
  2. comprising the departements Allier, Cantal,
  3. Haute-Loire, and Puy-de-Dome area 
  4. 26,000 sq km/10,036 sq mi population (1986)
  5. 1,334,000 capital is Clermont-Ferrand
  6. physical it lies at the Central Plateau and
  7. is mountainous, composed chiefly of volcanic
  8. rocks in several masses products cattle,
  9. wheat, wine, and cheese history named after
  10. the ancient Gallic Avenni tribe whose leader,
  11. Vercingetorix, led a revolt aginst the Romans
  12. in 52 BC.  In the 14th century the Auvergne
  13. was divided into a duchy, dauphiny, and
  14. countship. The duchy and dauphiny were united
  15. by the dukes of Bourbon before being
  16. confiscated by Francis I in 1527. The
  17. countship united with France in 1615.
